description
Crisped Shaggy Wood Fern
(Dryopteris dickinsii 'Crispa')
This species is quite similar to Dryopteris cycadina with its pinnate blade and lustrous black stipe and rachis scales. The color is however a yellow-green and the veins are notceably impressed into the foliage. In this variation the slightly lobed pinnule margins also undulate giving this a ruffled crispy look.
This species is thought to have hybridized with D. cycadina to produce D. namegatae. Barbara Hoshizaki have been going through all the various forms of cycadina that I have amassed to determine if namegatae is actually being grown in the US. I believe I do have some that key out that way but Barbara is a bit skeptical. Dryopteris are the DYC's. damn yellow daisies, of the fern world!
