Siebold's Wood Fern
(Dryopteris sieboldii)
Discovered in Japan by Dr. Von Siebold, this fern was introduced to English gardeners in 1852 by Van Houtee who names it in honor of its discoverer. The only other species name that has been used for this fern was the descriptive name podophyllum which referred to the fact that the lowest pinnae were stalked.
It is the bold halberd-shaped fronds, somewhat reminiscent of Phelbodium pseudoaurem, in their general shape and coloration, that makes this fern such an eye-popper. The prominent mid-veins add further dimension numerous sori, randomly scattered on the frond reverse, change from pale green to shiny black as they mature.
